As most of the world knows by now, on March 17, 2011, the UN Security Council imposed Resolution 1973. For those who DON'T habla, according to CNN, the resolution demands Libyan forces impose an "immediate ceasefire" against rebel forces, and green-lit a no-fly zone, I'm guessing over the Gulf of Sidra and the Med.
Personally, what does this resolve? Sure, we can impose no-fly zones, and we can freeze assets, and we can scream to high heaven about how Gaddafi is playing hard-ball, but what does it do? It does only one thing: preempt war.
Now, as much as I hate to say it, having done what I've done in this life, I personally believe that we should just go in there, remove Gaddafi, charge him with war crimes and replace him with someone who DOES habla.
Hate to say it, folks, but every time we green-light something like this, it always escalates. What I fear now is that this time it'll be even worse than OEF or OIF. I mean, we (the Canadian Forces) are pulling out of Afghanistan in July, the Americans are slowly pulling out of Iraq...only to probably be called upon to be sent to Tunisia, Chad, Egypt or even Tripoli itself.
Discuss.
